Mumbai Oct 9, 2011 : India's future seems to be in danger as an education
scam, costing Rs 1,000 crore, has been unearthed in Maharshtra.
Citing the scam, the state government started investigation to find out
how many students on the rolls of state run and government aided schools
are bogus.
"We found that some divisions altogether did not exist. In some places,
same students were made to sit for the morning school and afternoon
schools during the inspection," stated School Education Minister,
Rajendra Darda.
A survey, conducted by the state government, shows that 1.4 lakh out of 7
lakh school students in the list of 3500 schools are bogus. The survey
was carried out only in Nanded district of the state. Now, another 35
districts will come under the same survey.
The final survey report will be tabled before the state cabinet within
one week, sources informed on Sunday, Oct 9.
In an inspection carried out in the Nanded district, of 7 lakh school students shown on the records of 3500 schools, a whopping 1.4 lakh were found to be bogus, which means that the state handed over an extra unaccounted money for amount of Rs 120 crore to these schools.
With the survey being replicated across 35 districts, experts warn it could be a 1000 crore rupee scam.
The inspection report will be prepared and put before the state cabinet in a week's time.
The scam has come to light but who will be held accountable for the mess and what about the money already given in grants to the schools.
