Chinese Techweb reported a news where a retailer cooperated with engineers and logistics personnel to exploit a loophole in the after sales service. The retailer sent 121 sets of fake iPhone 4S “Band” (i.e. the core internal boards excluding battery and back plate) back to Apple for replacement. Apple issued real parts to replace the fake parts, but soon found out that the 121 “faulty” phones contains fake parts. All the personnel involved in the scam have since surrendered to the police.
According to the retailer, the cost of the “fake phone” is around 1000 RMB (USD 161), which includes the iPhone backplace, battery and the fake “Band”. After replacing with real parts, they can resell in the market for more than 3000 RMB (more than USD 480) each.
